Work Experience with Harries Planning Design Management
Here at Harries Planning Design Management, we’re keen to share what we do and educate young people about what a career in building design and construction can offer. Whether you spend a week or a month with us, we offer work experience placements designed to show students every aspect of our business.
Students who spend a week with us are given a practical insight into how we work at Harries Planning Design Management. Students will spend time in the office and out on site. After an induction and orientation day at our North Pembrokeshire offices in Eglwyswrw, we will aim to take work experience students out with us for a site visit. Following the site visit, students will have the opportunity to draw up plans, alter and amend them and create a portfolio to take away with them at the end of the week.
Students who can spend longer with us have an opportunity to get more involved in building design and planning work, to meet different clients and learn about their projects, and to gain more skills.
Work experience isn’t just an opportunity for the students who spend time with us – here at Harries Planning Design Management we see these times as healthy for our business too, bringing in new ideas and keeping us fresh.
If you're interested in spending some time with us on work experience, post or email a cv and covering letter to Wyn Harries.

We have welcomed students from local secondary schools, Ysgol y Preseli in Crymych, Ysgol Uwchradd Aberteifi in Cardigan, Ysgol Bro Teifi in Llandysul, and from further afield such as Christ College Brecon, to take part in work experience placements with us.
I undertook work experience with Harries Planning Design Management during the summer between my first and second year of university. During this time, I learnt valuable knowledge of the planning system. The diverse range of disciplines at Harries Planning Design Management, which include design, surveying and planning, enabled me to gain a range of experience across these sectors - something which would not have necessarily been achievable in many other consultancies. Harries Planning Design Management not only provided me with this planning knowledge, of which I continue to use in the profession today, but, perhaps more importantly, an excellent introduction into the world of planning at the very preliminary stages of my career.. and for that I am very grateful!
Aneura achieved a BSc in Architecture from Bath University and is now employed by McGregor Smith, an award winning Landscape Architecture practice, also based in Bath. She undertook a week of work experience with Harries Planning Design Management in 2009 following which she continued with us one day a week while studying for her A Levels.
I undertook a week’s work experience with Harries Planning Design Management during June 2009. I was pretty certain I wanted to study architecture at university, but the week’s worth of work experience with Wyn and Darren certainly helped me along my way to make that decision. Shortly after completing my week of work experience, I was offered further work experience with Harries Planning Design Management to assist with surveys once a week during my A-Levels. During this time I was taught how to obtain measurements and levels of proposed and existing sites, which is an essential tool if you are to embark on a career in Architecture. Working at Harries Planning Design Management offered me a valuable insight into life in practice, of which I benefitted greatly from in both my undergraduate and postgraduate studies.
Ieuan went on to study civil engineering after he left school. He gained a first class honours degree at Cardiff University and now works for Volker Fitzpatrick Ltd. During his time with us, Ieuan worked on planning proposals for housing and small commercial properties, undertaking surveys of plots and existing buildings. He implemented AutoCAD to provide detailed drawings of the current and proposed layouts or properties or relevant or modifications.
I was given the opportunity to spend two summers work experience with Harries Planning Design Management between sixth form years and university. I assisted in undertaking surveys and drawing these up in AutoCAD with support, along with developing the layouts to include in early extension proposals. At this point I was already planning a career in Civil Engineering and having not worked in this environment or used the specialist programmes involved with this line of work, it turned out to be wholly beneficial in developing my skills early on. I am currently based in London working as a Senior Engineer for a multidisciplinary principal contractor and still use the skills I learnt from my time with Wyn. The support provided from Wyn himself and others within the company was invaluable and I have fond memories of the time I spent there.
In 2009, I was fortunate enough to have work experience with Harries Planning Design Management. Through this experience I was able to gain an appreciation of how the construction industry works and learn about the career opportunities within the industry – Architecture, Town Planning, Project Management etc. – All of which I had some experience with at HPDM. The experience was definitely a driver for me to develop a career within construction.
Now I work for Carmarthenshire County Council as a Quantity Surveyor, after successfully achieving a first class honours degree in 'Quantity Surveying and Commercial Management' at the University of South Wales. Further to this, I am also undertaking my 'Assessment of Professional Competency' in order to become a chartered member of the RICS.
I firmly believe that the work experience was of great value and a contributing factor for me pursuing this career. I have met Wyn on several occasions following the work experience and has been of great help and support – I am exceptionally grateful.
I undertook a week's work experience with Harries Planning Design Management in June 2012. During my week I got an insight into planning, surveying and design management of various projects locally, with site visits of current and past projects. Now in my final year at The Royal Agricultural University, Cirencester aspiring to have a career in Chartered Surveying and Land Agency, my week with Wyn and Darren gave me great knowledge of the planning and construction industry, which has been beneficial for numerous modules on my University course. Diolch am y cyfle.
