Crymych Sheep Market

The Sheep Market in Crymych, North Pembrokeshire was relocated to new premises on an industrial park on the outskirts of the town, making way for sheltered housing and a new doctors’ surgery. The old market took place every fortnight and accommodated 1000 lambs.

Harries Planning Design Management were briefed to create a new market with double the capacity.

We prepared preliminary designs and project costings, viability studies, on site options and commissioned ground investigation. On winning the project, we prepared detailed designs, drew up the schedule of works, managed the tendering process and drew up the contract documentation. Leading a client appointed professional team including structural and civil engineers, mechanical and electrical consultants, ground investigators and CDM Co-ordinators, we chaired monthly progress meetings, dealt with valuations and certificates, agreed variations and the final account.

An example of where agricultural building meets commercial building, the resulting facility has been a huge success for the farming community, with farmers and dealers coming from across Pembrokeshire and Ceredigion. Marts are held every week, featuring 2,200 lambs. The building design incorporates sustainable features such as rainwater harvesting which provides water for washing down vehicles and the market facility itself, and vital biosecurity measures.

The increased capacity of the market contributes to sustainability and animal welfare by reducing the distance many farmers have to travel with their animals.

Project highlights:

  • Increased capacity
  • Rainwater harvesting
  • Livestock security/biosecurity measures
  • Important community building
  • Management of a multidisciplinary team
  • Value engineering
